Profits first in Belarusian nuclear power plant electricity export

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) – Economic advisability instead of politics should come first in disputes about the possibility of exporting the electricity the Belarusian nuclear power plant will generate, BelTA learned from the latest interview of Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk with the New Europe weekly.

Asked where the Belarusian nuclear power plant's electricity will be sold, Mikhail Mikhadyuk remarked that Belarus does not have sufficient fuel and energy resources of its own. “The main purpose of building a nuclear power plant in Belarus is to diversify the kinds of fuel, which are used to generate electricity and to reduce the prime cost of electricity generated in Belarus. The measures are supposed to bolster the country's energy security and the competitive ability of the national economy,” stressed the Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister.

According to the source, economic advisability instead of politics should be prioritized when the possible export of the Belarusian nuclear power plant's electricity is considered. “In turn, we are ready to cooperate in exporting electricity from Belarus to neighboring countries,” he added.

A Belarusian delegation involving Mikhail Mikhadyuk met with representatives of the European Commission in Luxembourg on 13-14 March. During the meeting the sides discussed a number of matters concerning the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, including the evaluation of results of the stress tests, which had been carried out using European ENSREG methods.
