MFA on GRECO report: Cooperation against corruption should rely on dialogue of experts

MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – The international cooperation against corruption should rely on the dialogue of experts, Spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told a press briefing when commenting on the interim compliance report of the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) on 8 September.

“Belarus is open to further cooperation with the Council of Europe and GRECO against corruption. The Belarusian side believes that the cooperation against corruption should rely, first of all, on the dialogue of professional experts,” Dmitry Mironchik stressed.

According to the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in GRECO Belarus is represented by the Office of the Prosecutor General. The agency regularly provides information about the fulfillment of recommendations to GRECO and sends its representatives to GRECO sessions and other anti-corruption events of the Council of Europe.

“The participation in GRECO is used by the specialized bodies of Belarus as an instrument for analyzing the best foreign practices and improving the national anti-corruption system. I want to reiterate that there are no de jure obligations to publish reports within the framework of GRECO, and the partial fulfillment of recommendations by the member states is a normal practice. The cases when the country fulfils absolutely all recommendations are very rare,” the spokesman said.
