IAEA Director General: NPP safety has greatly improved in last 5 years

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) - The safety of nuclear power plants has considerably improved in the past 5 years, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said at the opening of the exhibition and conference AtomExpo Belarus in Minsk on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

“Security is the main area of our work in nuclear power development. Since 2011 the safety of exploiting nuclear power plants around the world has significantly improved. We have reached considerable success in this area,” noted Yukiya Amano.

“The work in improving safety should be held on a permanent basis,” he underlined.

The IAEA Director General noted that the countries with a well-developed nuclear power industry should keep transparent in their work, cooperating with the general public, industrial community, international organizations, including IAEA.

Yukiya Amano expressed confidence that nuclear power plants will prove themselves as the safest power resource in the nearest decades.
