Belarus’ first cosmonaut Vasilevskaya plans to visit Yuri Gagarin’s hometown

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – I am planning to visit the birth place of Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut of sovereign Belarus Marina Vasilevskaya said at a meeting with young people at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

"I am looking forward to visiting the hometown of the first cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin. It would be a great honor for me, as well as for all Belarusians," said Marina Vasilevskaya, answering a question from Natalia Gagarina, the niece of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who was also present at the meeting.

Marina Vasilevskaya considers it symbolic that the flight of the first Belarusian cosmonaut took place in the year of the 90th anniversary of the birth of Yuri Gagarin. "I'm happy that it happened the way it did," she added.

This idea was supported by the Belarusian cosmonaut Anastasia Lenkova.

Taking this opportunity, Natalia Gagarina invited Marina Vasilevskaya, Anastasia Lenkova and the Belarusian delegation as a whole to come to the birth place of Yuri Gagarin in the year of the 90th anniversary of the birth of the first cosmonaut (Yuri Gagarin would have turned 90 on 9 March 2024). She recalled the tradition when cosmonauts visit the village of Klushino to drink water from the Gagarin well, which is located near the house where the cosmonaut was born.
