MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – A special commission is now looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a worker at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from the press service of the ASE Group of Companies, the general contractor in charge of building the nuclear power plant.
At 16:20 on 26 August a fatal industrial accident occurred at the construction site of the second power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. An employee working for the Belarusian office of the Russian company OOO Trest RosSEM died. The State Labor Inspection Department of the Belarusian Labor and Social Protection Ministry is investigating the case.
According to the Labor Protection and Fire Safety Department of AO NIAEP's representative office in Belarus, the tragedy may have been caused because personnel of the subcontractor company violated the safety rules while delivering gas bottles. “The Belarusian side was informed about the situation right away. The company has set up a commission, which specialists are already working to ascertain the circumstances that resulted in the death of the construction worker. All the ascertained facts are forwarded to the customer of the construction project,” said the source.
The accident will in no way affect the radiation background in the region. No nuclear materials are present at the construction site.
The OOO Trest RosSEM representative office will take care of all the expenses needed to deliver the body to the home town, arrange the funeral, and provide financial aid to the family.
