Commemorative plaque to Yakub Kolas unveiled in Russia's Kursk Oblast

MOSCOW, 13 September (BelTA) – The Russian town of Oboyan (Kursk Oblast) put up a commemorative plaque dedicated to Yakub Kolas, the press service of the Belarusian Embassy in Russia told BelTA.

The Belarusian classic writer lived in Kursk Oblast together with his family from 1917 till 1921. He was a teacher in the village of Maliye Kruki. During that time Yakub Kolas wrote about 20 poems, two stories, and several feature articles and continued his work on the poems "The New Land" and "Symon the Musician".

“People still share recollections of those times. They say that Maliye Kruki is the most educated village. The local population gives credit to Yakub Kolas for this. He instilled love for reading in their grandparents. Here Yakub Kolas established a literacy center, organized a reading house and was engaged in educational activities,” the diplomatic mission noted.

The commemorative plaque was put up on the initiative of the Yakub Kolas Literary Memorial Museum with the support of the Kursk regional administration and Oboyan district authorities. Besides, the Oboyan Local Lore Museum arranged an exhibition dedicated to Yakub Kolas. It includes documents and photos, newspaper pages and copies of manuscripts.
