Cooperation with OSCE seen as important for Belarus

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) - Belarus attaches great importance to the cooperation in the OSCE, as evidenced by the nomination of Belarus' Permanent Representative in Vienna Alena Kupchyna for the post of the OSCE Secretary General, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said during the forum 25 Years of Belarus' Foreign Policy in Minsk on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

"We sincerely hope that Alena Kupchyna will take up this post," he said.

“By actively participating in the OSCE, Belarus makes an important contribution to the development of pan-European dialogue across the full range of issues of cooperation and security in the region,” Vladimir Makei said. He also noted that the OSCE is an important channel for communicating the Belarusian position, is an instrument for promoting the foreign policy initiatives, developing a dialogue with the EU and the United States and attracting international expertise.

However, when talking to the media, the diplomat suggested that the OSCE could do more to resolve armed conflicts. “Why we suggested Alena Kupchyna for the post of Secretary General? Because we believe that she can help the organization play a bigger role, have a bigger say in the issues the organizaiton is responsible for, namely security, peace and stability in our region,” he said.
