MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – Belarus has good opportunities for promoting many initiatives, Kent Harstedt, OSCE PA Special Representative for Eastern Europe, told reporters after the meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 23 January, BelTA informs.
“I think Belarus has good opportunities for promoting various initiatives. As for Helsinki 2, there are certain difficulties because there are many considerations regarding the beginning of such a process. I think people in many capitals in other states are thinking about this initiative at this stage,” Kent Harstedt said.
He remarked that the Helsinki 2 initiative has not been officially discussed in the format of the OSCE PA yet, particularly in the Bureau or the Permanent Committee. “But I will definitely inform the assembly about this issue,” the special representative said.
Speaking about the meeting with Alexander Lukashenko, Kent Harstedt said that the conversation with the Belarusian president kind of continued the previous meetings. They have discussed a wide range of issues concerning the elections and election processes, the importance of improving the election legislation.
The participants of the meeting also touched upon the interaction with the OSCE, including the involvement of Belarus within the framework of the Minsk negotiations and the Minsk agreements. It was mentioned that Minsk hosted the OSCE PA session last summer.
“We have also discussed the future. I have mentioned the death penalty topic. We have discussed a wide range of issues today,” Kent Harstedt added.More about Politics
