Pakistan keen on partial replacement of Polish seed potato imports with Belarusian product

MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – Pakistan shows interest in replacing a part of its seed potato imports from Poland with the Belarusian product, First Deputy Minister for National Food Security and Research of Pakistan Muhammad Abid Javed said at the meeting of the Belarusian-Pakistani working group on cooperation in agriculture on 24 February, BelTA has learned.

“We have been impressed with the potato growing technologies in Belarus and we would like to partially replace our potato imports from Poland with the Belarusian product,” the official stressed.

In his words, the Pakistani delegation already held a number of meetings at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, got familiar with the cutting-edge technologies in the agrarian sector. “One of the main areas of our future cooperation is mechanization. We are impressed with the progress Belarus has made in the agricultural industry. We also plan to conduct joint research in horticulture and develop cooperation in the area of plant genetics and selection, seed breeding, especially new vegetable seeds,” the Pakistani representative said.

According to him, the delegation was interested to learn about Belarus' latest achievements in meat and milk processing. “We plan to develop cooperation in this area as well. The cooperation between our countries will be expanding to contribute to a higher trade turnover,” Muhammad Abid Javed said.

Belarus and Pakistan signed three ministerial memorandums of cooperation: in agriculture; plant quarantine and phyto-sanitary measures; and in veterinary and sanitary.

The Belarusian-Pakistani working group on agriculture will next meet in Pakistan in March 2018.
