MINSK, 17 March (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 116 Aliaksandra Sasnovich has successfully started her campaign in the Miami Open qualifying round, BelTA has learned.
In the first round the Belarusian defeated Türkiye’s world number 269 Ayla Aksu, in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. In the decisive match for a place in the main draw, Aliaksandra Sasnovich will face either World No.90 Renata Zarazúa of Mexico or Italy’s world number 621 Martina Trevisan.
Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning Miami Open champion and world number one, will begin her campaign in the second round. Her opponent will be the winner of the match between the U.S. Ann Li (No. 41) and one of the qualifiers. On 15 March, Sabalenka won the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells for the first time, defeating Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the final.
The main draw will be held from 17 to 29 March. In 2025, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula of the USA in the final, 7-5, 6-2. Another Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka won this tournament three times (2009, 2011, 2016).
