MINSK, 26 March (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka has made it to the Miami Open finals, BelTA has learned.
The reigning Miami Open champion will defend her title in a final match against the world's No.4 Coco Gauff of the United States. The decisive match is scheduled for 22.00 Minsk time and will be broadcast live by the Belarus 5 TV channel. Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff have faced each other 12 times previously, with each player securing six victories. Sabalenka currently has 23 WTA titles to her name, while her opponent today has 11 wins.
On her way to the final, the Belarusian defeated three American players: Ann Li (39) 7-6, 6-4; Caty McNally (72) 6-4, 6-2; and Hailey Baptiste (45) 6-4, 6-4 and also China’s Zheng Qinwen (26) 6-3, 6-4. In the semifinal match, she overcame world No.2, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
The winner of the current competition in Miami will be determined on 29 March; the champion will earn over $1.1 million and 1,000 ranking points. A year ago, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula in the Miami Open final 7-5, 6-2. Another Belarusian tennis player, Victoria Azarenka, won this tournament three times (2009, 2011, 2016).
