Minister: Sport is not a place for political games, manipulations

MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) – Sport is not a place for political games and manipulations, Belarusian Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said as he addressed the conference "Tokyo Olympics: 100 Days To Go” in Minsk on 15 April, BelTA has learned.

“Unfortunately, contrary to the main idea of Pierre de Coubertin "Oh sport, you are peace!" the Olympic Games are turning into an element of political games, a policy of double standards,” Sergei Kovalchuk said. I believe that the Olympic Games and sport should be a unifying force of peoples, countries and continents. Sport is not a place for political games and manipulations. All efforts should be directed towards uniting society in a fair fight for the Olympic podium. In this regard, sports science and medicine play a significant role."

"The Olympic Games are just around the corner. It is good that we have this unique opportunity to discuss all the aspects of the preparation for the Games and to make adjustments to the training processm if necessary," the minister added.

The international science conference “Tokyo Olympics: 100 Days to Go” is running in the Belarusian capital on 15-16 April. The event is set to explore major avenues of scientific, methodological and medical support of athletes' preparation for the Olympic Games, to facilitate international exchange of knowledge between scientists, experts and representatives of the sports community.

The conference is organized by the NOC of Belarus, the Sport and Tourism Ministry, the National Research Center for Sports, the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture in cooperation with the National Anti-Doping Agency, the Presidential Sport Club, and the Belarusian Sports Medicine Association.
