"On Point"
MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) - In a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel political analyst Alexey Naumov, the author of the Telegram project Vneshpol, explained the meaning of the term Trumpism, associated with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“I wouldn’t call it a radically new movement. Trumpism is a form of civic economic nationalism. In our post-Soviet reality, the word ‘nationalism’ has a negative connotation,” said Alexey Naumov. “However, for Trump, nationalism means putting one’s own nation (not an ethnic group, but a nation) first.”
The political analyst pointed out that the White House leader is guided by the principle of “America First”. “It would seem like an obvious thought. Every country, presumably, looks after its own wellbeing. But let me give an example that will make this situation more understandable. Take the administration of Joe Biden, who was a president from the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party has a more democratic foundation and believes that fighting poverty worldwide is beneficial for the USA,” he said.
According to Alexey Naumov, the Democratic Party sees the USA not just as a country with its own interests, but as a vehicle for liberal ideology. At the same time, in Donald Trump's understanding, what matters for America is what makes the country richer, stronger, and more influential.
“When a person or a political movement is guided by absolutely abstract concepts, like ‘transatlantic interests’ or ‘promoting democracy’, you can fit anything into that,” the analyst believes. “But when you simply talk about wanting to make a deal, it’s understandable, predictable, and allows for building normal relations. This is how Donald Trump differs from other presidents - through his commitment to a clear, down-to-earth realism.”
According to Alexey Naumov, Trumpism is the desire to put one’s own country and people first in the most straightforward terms: “The desire to be stronger, richer, and more influential than other countries, while taking their interests into account. Trumpism is an intra-American movement.”
