MOSCOW, 8 December (BelTA) – The Commission on the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory under the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will convene in Moscow on 10 December, BelTA learned from the press service of the Parliamentary Assembly.

“The meeting participants will review progress to implement state programs to perpetuate the memory of those who fell defending the Fatherland in Belarus and Russia, and will identify further areas for improving this work. The meeting also plans to establish a branch of the Scientific Advisory Council on the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory under the Parliamentary Assembly, discuss proposals for creating a Union State Prize for contributions to historical memory preservation, and consider an initiative to hold patriotic events at the National Center for Patriotic Education in the Brest Fortress and the Avangard Defense and Sports Camp in Volgograd Oblast,” the press service noted.

The Commission on the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory under the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State was formed in accordance with instructions given by the presidents of Belarus and Russia during the International Forum of the Union State “Great Heritage – Common Future” in Volgograd in April 2025. Its main objective is to consolidate public and political forces in Belarus and Russia, as well as citizens of both countries, especially youth, around joint projects aimed at defending the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War, World War II, and the heroic deeds of the Soviet people.

The commission is co-chaired by Vadim Ipatov, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State and Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus; and Ivan Melnikov, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State and First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of Russia. The commission also includes the following members from Belarus: Valery Gaidukevich, Irina Kostevich, Andrei Krupenkin, Igor Lutsky, and Mikhail Mironchik. Members from Russia include Elena Afanasyeva, Olga Germanova, Andrei Krasov, Ruslan Smashnev, and Artem Turov.

Representatives from the Belarusian and Russian Ministries of Defense, the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee, and the Smolensk Regional Government have been invited to participate in the event.
