Tentative plans for military glory city status for Mogilev

MOGILEV, 2 August (BelTA) – Mogilev may become the first city of military glory of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. The possibility was discussed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Belarus Yevgeny Lukyanov met with top Mogilev Oblast officials on 2 August, BelTA has learned.

Chairman of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee Leonid Zayats noted that Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko backed the idea during the Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia in 2021. Leonid Zayats continued: “We've already put forward this proposal. Instituting this title is the idea. We have a long history and share heroic past with the Russian Federation. Together we liberated our country from the Nazi. I would like to note that Mogilev is a prototype of Stalingrad. The city fought for 23 days and nights. We've raised the matter of granting the title of the city of Union State military glory to Mogilev. The initiative has been approved by Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko.”

The ambassador noted that giving the new status to Mogilev should become a priority. He was enthusiastic about the idea. “I think it will not be difficult from the legal point of view. Mogilev may become the first city in the Union State to bear such a status. The city deserves this title. Fierce fighting against German invaders took place here. The appearance of such a city in the Union State of Belarus and Russia is unprecedented.”
