OSTROVETS, 23 August (BelTA) – Information will be released next year after considering the possibility of building a new nuclear power plant in Belarus. Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Denis Moroz made the statement while talking to reporters after representatives of Kazakhstan’s mass media and expert community visited the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA has learned.
Denis Moroz said: “The head of state has already pointed out several times that we should think about increasing the share of nuclear energy in the total energy budget. First of all, because the Belarusian nuclear power plant has proven the viability of getting a reliable source of energy that is not tied to the cost of energy resources on the world market. It allows operating a stable and predictable national economy and making precise development plans.”
According to the deputy energy minister, to fulfill a decision of the head of state and in accordance with the government’s plans work is now in progress to consider prospects of building another nuclear power plant in Belarus or building another unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The work is supposed to be finished by the end of 2025.
“We already see that the volume of consumption of electrical energy will increase by several times in the future. First, thanks to the stimulating measures implemented in the country and second, thanks to changes of the structure of consumers themselves. New branches of the economy appear. They rely heavily on electricity. For instance, data centers, cryptocurrency mining, electric vehicles,” Denis Moroz added. “These areas develop intensively and we should scrupulously analyze what capabilities we can use to ensure their operation. Generating more electricity is one of the possible and most obvious options.”
