Proposal to include provisions on national identity to preamble of Belarus' constitution

MINSK, 24 June (BelTA) – A proposal has been put forward to supplement the preamble of the Constitution with provisions on the preservation of national identity and sovereignty, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Belarus Piotr Miklashevich told reporters on 24 June, BelTA has learned.

“The preamble of the Constitution is the most important part of the Constitution, as it sets out the basic values, ideas, cultural and spiritual heritage of Belarusian people who are the source of power in the country. Therefore, it is time to clarify and supplement some provisions of the preamble in order to get it up to speed with social and political developments in our country,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

First, it is proposed to supplement the provision on the right of Belarusian people to self-determination with such concepts as the preservation of national identity and sovereignty. “Secondly, this provision is to formalize the idea about preservation of cultural and spiritual traditions of Belarusian people, which are crucial for the ideology of constitutional legal development. And third, I would like to note that today a fair society is taking shape in our country and this process should also be reflected. Therefore, it is proposed to supplement the preamble with the provision that a fair society based on solidarity and common welfare is gaining ground in the Republic of Belarus,” the chairman of the Constitutional Court added.

The seventh meeting of the Constitutional Commission is taking place on 24 June. The meeting is to discuss changes to the preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and constitutional provisions on the foundations of the constitutional system.
