MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) - A recent poll suggests that the absolute majority of Belarusians exercise their right to vote in elections, Director of the EcooM think tank Sergei Musiyenko told BelTA.
Respondents were asked the following question: “The presidential election in Belarus will take place in 2025. Do you usually vote in elections?” 65.1% of respondents answered that they always go to the polls. 15.7% said they do their best to vote in elections, 7.1% said that their decision to vote depends on the situation. 6.2% said they never vote, and 5.9% found it difficult to answer.
“This corresponds to the reality. We have seen high voter turnout in the last decades. People consider it their duty. This proves that we provide transparent, clear opportunities for people to vote. They exercise their right to vote, fulfilling their civic duty. These are real figures. We observe this from year to year. This comes as no surprise for us, by the way. Such activity is our reality,” Sergei Musiyenko said. “It is difficult to understand what makes someone decide to never go to the polls: whether it is a protest, or social infantilism, or indifference. Yet, we have such categories of people and we need to study them in depth. They refuse to vote in elections. They do not show any social activity, like, for example, participation in nationwide voluntary clean-up campaigns.”
At the same time, the majority of Belarusians care about the future of the country. “People consider the voting day as some kind of celebration. They come with children, bring whole families. The older generation has a habit of casting their votes first. They come and wait for polling stations to open, communicate with each other. It is great. In my opinion, this is a sign of a healthy society, when people openly express their will en masse. Such a picture is encouraging,” the analyst added.
The sociological survey “Factors of sustainable development” was conducted by EcooM from 1 to 21 October 2024. The survey polled 1,580 people of different gender, age, educational attainments, place of residence and region. The error of the poll is below 2.5%.
