Personal data for ID cards of Belarusians to be kept in closed system

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – Personal data needed for the issuance of ID cards will be accumulated in a closed information system, Head of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Aleksei Begun told the ONT TV channel, BelTA informs.

According to Aleksei Begun, the accumulation of personal data that will be used in biometric documents does not require an Internet connection. “In other words, this is a closed information system, and only employees who have the corresponding keys will have access to it. And only these employees will be able to receive and process applications and forward them to the personalization center,” he said.

At the same time, Aleksei Begun noted that people should be careful and cautious and should not give their documents to anyone else. In this case it will be impossible to steal personal data. “If people keep their documents with them, it will be impossible to read the chip remotely. In fact, everything depends on the way a person keeps his/her ID-card: if a person does not pass it to anyone else (just like with a bank card), then it will be impossible to read the data. If a person has lost an ID card, he/she must immediately report it to the police so that the police cancel the digital signature and declare the document form invalid. Then a person's personal data will not be leaked.

When asked when biometric documents will be issued in Belarus, the migration official explained that the necessary infrastructure is already in place, all preparatory measures are nearing completion, now the head of state needs to sign a corresponding decree. However, after that, it will take up to three months to complete all organizational and technical procedures, Aleksei Begun explained. “We must also approve the provision on blank documents and send these documents to all international organizations with which relevant agreements were concluded. This is needed to do certification, attestation of the information security system, and resolve a number of other technical issues. We will have 60 days to do it,” he added.
