Palestinian Culture Day, Land Day celebrated in Minsk

MINSK, 2 April (BelTA) - The House of Friendship in Minsk hosted an event dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Palestinian Land Day and Culture Day on 1 April, BelTA has learned.

Palestine is using every means available to resist attempt to erase its historical heritage, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Palestine to Belarus Kamal Al-Shakhra stressed during the event. He noted that Land Day serves as a reminder that the Palestinian problem remains on the agenda. “The Day of Palestinian Culture is a bridge connecting the past and the present,” the ambassador believes. He said that writers and poets who celebrated Palestine endured tough times but never broke; they kept strong.
“We highly value Belarus' position. It supports us on the international stage, including at the UN. We want to live in peace. We are waiting for peace. It is hard and painful for us, but we continue to fight for our freedom, for our Palestine,” Ambassador Kamal Al-Shakhra noted.

Nina Ivanova, Chairwoman of the Presidium of the Belarusian Society of Friendship and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, emphasized that despite everything, Palestine has preserved its culture, literature and traditions.

“Culture is a bridge of friendship. Everyone understands the importance of building these bridges, not destroying them,” Chairman of the Belarus-Palestine association Yuri Bondar said as he addressed the guests.

The Day of Palestinian Culture shares the date with the birthday of renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. This connection underscores the importance of writers, publicists and musicians in society, those who carried the banner of national interests through every stage of the Palestinian struggle for independence. Mahmoud Darwish has greatly enriched Arab culture. His poems, set to music, have been passed through the generations.
The event was attended by diplomats, members of the public, young people, and activists of the House of Friendship. The guests enjoyed the poems by Mahmoud Darwish and live music.
