Minsk to host conference to mark Treaty of Riga anniversary on 18-19 March

MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) – The Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus jointly with the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus will host an international scientific conference Peace of Riga 1921 in the Fate of the Belarusian People (to mark the 100th anniversary of the document) on 18-19 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Treaty of Riga celebrates its 100th anniversary on 18 March 2021. “After the Polish-Soviet war delegations of Poland, the RSFSR and the Ukrainian SSR, without regard for the interests of the Belarusian people, signed a peace treaty by in Riga. Its conclusion resulted in the heaviest territorial losses. According to the treaty, almost half of the ethnic Belarusian territory was ceded to Poland. Although the Peace of Riga Treaty legally consolidated the independence of the SSRB (the Socialist Soviet Republic of Beylorussia) and guaranteed national and cultural rights to the Belarusians in the Polish state, but in the future it did not provide the realization of their rights to the spiritual and cultural development, did not contribute to the unity and security of the peoples of Eastern Europe, which was especially evident in September 1939,” the NASB said.

The conference will feature presentations by Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov, Rector of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Belarus Vyacheslav Danilovich, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Culture and Science of the House of Representatives Igor Marzalyuk, and the country's leading scientists with more than 40 reports on topical issues. The forum will highlight the fate of the Belarusian statehood under the geopolitical challenges of 1918-1923, the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1921. There will also be given evaluation to the role of the Treaty of Riga in the fate of the Belarusian people and in the national tradition.

The tasks of the forum include the improvement of interaction between academic and university science on the issues related to the development of national socio-humanitarianism, organization and management of the creative initiative of students in studying the history of Belarusian statehood.
