MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) – Migratory cranes have been spotted above the Belarusian city of Brest. A photo of the birds has been shared on social media by the nature conservation organization “Center for aiding birds and animals Home of the Brest Stork”. A BelTA correspondent talked to the organization’s Director Dmitry Avdeyev to find out whether the spotting of the birds means that the birds had already returned to Belarus.
According to Dmitry Avdeyev, a flock of cranes was spotted yesterday. The photo was enhanced using artificial intelligence because the birds’ appearance was unexpected and the quality of the photo was not so good. “This is why commentators on the Internet are unsure whether they are storks or cranes. But they are cranes,” he noted.
Does that mean these birds have already returned to Belarus? The director of the nature conservation organization emphasized that he has not yet seen any birds on the ground in the region. “This is why it is too early to talk about the return of the birds. These may just be migratory cranes and they may have flown to another region,” Dmitry Avdeyev said.
A short while ago 13 whooper swans, which are rare for this region, were spotted in Brest Oblast. “Thirteen birds were sitting in a rapeseed field. It’s quite a rare sight for our area. We mostly see mute swans,” said the director of the nature conservation organization.
But there is still hope for an early spring. Dmitry Avdeyev shared that he had already photographed migratory starlings a few days before.
