MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) – The presidential election in Belarus will be a landmark event for many people far beyond the Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS Secretary General and head of the CIS observation mission at Belarus' presidential election Sergei Lebedev said at a meeting of the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies, BelTA has learned.

“It will not be an exaggeration to say that the presidential election in Belarus is of great interest to the CIS countries and a landmark international event for many people far beyond the CIS. We see that the voting is taking place amidst a difficult international situation. Belarus and the Union State in general are facing an unprecedented disinformation campaign with attempts to exert political pressure on government agencies, public associations and people's minds. Attempts are being made to discredit the election process, to intimidate voters and create an atmosphere of chaos and mistrust,” said Sergei Lebedev.

The CIS secretary general is convinced that such actions are doomed to failure. Sergei Lebedev emphasized that 'no one will be able to break the unity and resolve of the Belarusian people'. He recalled that CIS observers are monitoring the presidential election in Belarus; long-term observers of the mission are visiting regions of Belarus, holding meetings with government agencies, journalists and local authorities, presidential candidates and their authorized representatives. Sergei Lebedev added that in the current conditions, the role of international observation, including the CIS mission,  is increasing.
