MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – The cooperation between Gomel Oblast and Bryansk Oblast is quite successful, but cooperation potential has not been exhausted yet, Gomel Oblast Governor Ivan Krupko said as he met with Bryansk Oblast Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz before the opening of the Slavic Unity festival that is hosted by Gomel this year, BelTA has learned.

According to Ivan Krupko, the traditions of strengthening friendship and unity among Slavic peoples, along with the preservation of their culture and values, have deep historical roots. “Today we see that the relevance and significance of the festival [Slavic Unity] is growing, especially among the younger generation. Our task is to preserve the historical truth and genuine Slavic values, culture and traditions for the younger generation, to raise them as patriots in order to maintain peace on our Slavic land,” Ivan Krupko emphasized.

The governor went on saying that cooperation with Russian regions, especially with the partner region - Bryansk Oblast - is one of the priorities of the inter-regional cooperation policy of Gomel Oblast. “I am confident that the memorandum of understanding concluded between the Bryansk Oblast government and the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee (it was signed during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum) will bring our regions closer by fostering beneficial relationships and promoting industrial collaboration,” Ivan Krupko said.

He emphasized that interaction between twinned districts of the two regions is also gaining momentum. “This interaction is bearing fruit, but the potential for scaling up cooperation between Gomel Oblast and Bryansk Oblast is still huge, and we should make the most of it,” Ivan Krupko added.

Gomel is hosting the Slavic Unity festival of the border regions of Belarus and Russia. This year the festival is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. On Lenin Square, which is the main venue of the event, various thematic locations have opened, including literary, museum and information stands, as well as the City of Artisans that is operating under the motto “Artisans Remember: Craft Traditions for the Glory of Victory”. Interactive sites will be open all day long on the territory of the palace and park ensemble, on the embankment, near the medical university in the Friendship Square and in other places of the city.
