Belarus to improve farm animal and product traceability system

MINSK, 4 November (BelTA) - The second reading of the draft law “On amendments to the law concerning identification, registration, traceability of farm animals (herds), identification and traceability of products of animal origin” is scheduled for the autumn session of the Parliament, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agrarian Policy of the House of Representatives Nikolai Shevchuk.

Today the document has been submitted to the extended session of the relevant commission. “The bill is being prepared for the second reading at the autumn session,” Nikolai Shevchuk said.

The draft law is aimed at further development of the country's farming sector and improvement of relations in the area. It helps trace the entire chain from the birth of an animal to the products on the table through registration and other actions.

“The only legislative act in this agricultural sector is the law “Concerning identification, registration, traceability of farm animals (herds), identification and traceability of products of animal origin” that was adopted in 2015. Practices have been developed for its application over the past five years and a number of national legislative acts, international treaties of Belarus and acts of the Eurasian Economic Union have been issued in the area. All this required the adjustment of certain provisions and a bill has been drafted to make the necessary amendments,” the MP said.

The law of 2015 allowed for the registration and tracking of certain types of farm animals. The new draft law expanded the subject composition. “If earlier we registered such animals as horses, pigs, cattle, goats and sheep, then with the adoption of the draft law it will be necessary to ensure traceability of poultry, hydrobionts (crayfish, crabs), fur animals and bees. The adoption of the draft law to amend the legislation on the identification of farm animals and products of animal origin will contribute to increased safety during the movement of animals and products of animal origin both through the territory of our country and between the EAEU member states. It will also contribute to increasing the export potential of our country's economic entities,” Nikolai Shevchuk said.
