Experts on second IFV attempt: Making the family happy is what matters

MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – The most important goal of providing the second attempt at in vitro fertilization (IVF) at public expense is to bring happiness to families in which children will be born, BelTA learned from Valery Malashko, Chairman of the Healthcare, Physical Culture, Family and Youth Policy Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.

“It is necessary to understand that by increasing the number of in vitro fertilization attempts at public expense, we will not solve demographic issues. At the same time, and this is the most important thing, we will bring happiness to families who will have their own biological child,” said Valery Malashko.

According to the MP, Belarusian medical professionals have the most advanced IVF technologies at their disposal. This is evidenced by the effectiveness of in vitro fertilization procedures in the country, which are absolutely in line with global standards.

“We have all the modern capabilities to ensure that couples who, due to various circumstances, have been unable to conceive, can still become happy parents. The relevant technologies have been developing in Belarus for quite some time, and particularly actively for the last 15 years,” Valery Malashko added. He noted that both the technologies for performing IVF and the legal aspects of the procedure have now been fully established, therefore it is time to move forward.

Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak, a member of the Belarusian Women’s Union and Doctor of Medical Sciences, added that the single free IVF attempt already provided by the state brings significant benefits to both individual families and the state. “First, the family becomes happy when a child is born, and second, the demographic situation in our country improves,” noted Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak. Moreover, existing technologies allow a woman to give birth to a healthy child.

“And the fact that President Aleksandr Lukashenko is even considering [maximizing access to IVF procedures] confirms that our state cares about the health and happiness of women and their families,” she said.

BelTA reported earlier that the draft presidential decree “On in vitro fertilization” will be finalized as soon as possible. The innovations include the introduction of the second free IVF attempt not only for married women but also for single women. It is also planned to raise the age limit for the second attempt to 49 years. The second IVF attempt up to the age of 49 will be offered to those women who have been able to take advantage of the first attempt and give birth as a result.
