"On Point"
MINSK, 20 August (BELTA) – European regional security issues cannot be settled without involving Belarus and its leader, which Donald Trump understands, Andrei Bogodel, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Education and Science - Head of the Educational and Methodology Department of the Faculty of the General Staff of the Armed Forces at the Military Academy of Belarus, said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Commenting on the phone call between Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and U.S. President Donald Trump, the expert noted that it occurred at a most crucial moment. The American leader called his Belarusian counterpart ahead of the United States-Russia summit in Alaska. “The whole world was simply stunned. At some point, this call even overshadowed the talks in Alaska. But one just needs to see the role Belarus is beginning to play in this region [in Europe],” Andrei Bogodel said.
According to the expert, European regional security issues cannot be settled without involving Belarus and its leader. “Today the balance of power has shifted. During the time of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, everything was based on parity and a balance of power,” he emphasized.
Andrei Bogodel expressed confidence that the U.S. leadership views Belarus as a fully sovereign state and a reliable partner. This stands in sharp contrast to the EU policy, with its leaders claiming that Minsk is occupied by the Kremlin. But in fact, the expert is convinced that the Union State of Belarus and Russia actually strengthens the sovereignty of both countries.
