"On Point"
MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) – Ukrainian lawyer and blogger Tatiana Montyan talks on the drones in European countries, the reaction they trigger in the EU, and Europeans’ unwillingness to join the armed conflict in Ukraine in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Discussing the situation in countries bordering Ukraine, the lawyer recalled that some unidentified drones are “terrorizing” these states, raising the question of their origin and true launch sites. “We have seen many Russian drones landing nearly intact (mass production issues, presumably), making them easy to repair. As Zakharova [spokeswoman for Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova] correctly noted, you collect these drones from fields, fix them, and pretend they are Russian, while actually launching them at Europe yourselves to drag Europeans into the war, since your troops are struggling on the front,” the blogger noted.
She emphasized that after Maria Zakharova’s statement, any drones arriving in Europe, including those from Russia, can now be attributed to the Ukrainian military, who allegedly pick up nearly intact UAVs and launch them into European countries under the guise of being Russian. “These games, as they say, can be played collectively,” Tatiana Montyan said.
At the same time, she noted that the reaction of the EU’s defense and militry agencies to the drones raises some concerns, as rather large-scale military movements are beginning. According to Tatiana Montyan, European generals long believed that the echo of the Ukraine conflict would never reach them. “They are used to fighting with someone else’s hand. The war is raging somewhere far away, in some Donbass or something,” she said.
Tatiana Montyan is certain that the average European will not go under fire in Ukraine. “You know, I have a feeling that the West has already given everything it possibly could, or close to it,” the lawyer added. “Western elites are in no hurry to militarize their societies because they understand perfectly well that people would simply scatter. Those who are mobile will not go to fight.”
The blogger doubts that the average European would want to drop everything and go fight in Ukraine, as it is not their war – unless for very substantial compensation. “The percentage of men who love and know how to fight and would willingly do so is the same in any human population. It might be slightly higher if the society is initially militarized and if the sons of the elites are also fighting. But if no hypothetical ‘sons of Stalin’ are seen on the front, there will be few willing to go and fight,” Tatiana Montyan emphasized.
She also believes that propaganda will not work on the average European, noting a fundamental difference between evoking sympathy for Ukraine and forcing citizens to enlist, undergo military training, and likely die on the eastern front.
Furthermore, Tatiana Montyan believes it is necessary to consider the fact that there are many Ukrainian refugees in EU countries who are in no rush to take up arms and fight for their country. “And the average European will rightly say: we have a crowd of Ukrainian refugees hanging out here. Why on earth don’t they pack their bags and go fight for their Homeland? Why should we do it?” she noted.

“I cannot yet imagine what they think of themselves and how they plan to do all this. Of course, they are edging towards a war footing, though they are not eager yet to take some drastic actions due to uncertainty about potential consequences,” the expert said.
