"On Point"
MINSK, 13 October (BelTA) – Belarus, Russia and Ukraine could have existed within a common alliance, editor-in-chief of PolitRussia, political scientist Ruslan Ostashko said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“The example of Belarus is very telling. We have the Union State [of Belarus and Russia]. We are closely connected economically, historically, and culturally. Yet Belarus has remained an independent state with its own domestic and foreign policy. We [Russia] have many internal issues, and we resolve them. There have been critics in our country who have questioned such close ties, saying that we might be giving too much to Belarus. But in fact, it has been an investment that has paid off in many ways. And great thanks to the Belarusian people and the president of Belarus for this, because it is truly valuable,” Ruslan Ostashko emphasized.
According to him, the preferential loans provided by Russia cannot be compared to the support that Belarus has shown and continues to show.
“This was a wise policy. And we are proving it: we do not need expansion. We are not annexing the Republic of Belarus. If there had not been that insane, pro‑European Maidan in Ukraine, if that one percent of nationalists who eventually came to power in one form or another had not prevailed, then we (Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine) could have coexisted in a common alliance as it has always been historically. The West should see in our example what could have happened to Ukraine if it hadn't chosen the path it did. I am absolutely sure that any reasonable European would understand: ‘Why are you telling us stories? Russia doesn't need to take the Baltics or Poland, let alone invade Germany or France. Just look at how it interacts with Belarus.’ And when Europeans see that, they will say, ‘What are we afraid of? Don't we want that for ourselves?’”, the political scientist concluded.
