Expert assesses chances of dialogue between Minsk, Washington

MINSK, 7 August (BelTA) – Nikita Belenchenko, Director of the Center for International Studies of the Faculty of International Relations at Belarusian State University, gave his take on the prospects for dialogue between Minsk and Washington in the latest episode of V Teme [On Point] on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

“The international order is gradually being reshaped and the global community’s approach toward Belarus is evolving. It will take time. But for now, the United States remains the leading force in shaping this new world order, at least within the collective West. And the US has begun engaging in talks with Belarus,” Nikita Belenchenko noted.

The expert pointed out that Minsk-Washington relations have always been complex, though Belarus never refused dialogue. “In 2020, the US took the wrong path by refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the president and the election results. They attempted to reset relations by backing opposition projects, which ultimately failed,” he emphasized.

According to Nikita Belenchenko, understanding Eurasian dynamics is impossible without Belarus. “We are at the heart of key transport, logistics and economic corridors. Our participation in key regional organizations, like the SCO, CSTO and EAEU, confirms our leading role,” he added.

He also noted that Washington recognizes the failure of sanctions to achieve their goals, which partly explains the renewed dialogue. “The U.S. special envoy who visited Belarus [U. S. president’s Special Envoy Keith Kellogg] holds influence in American leadership. I believe additional formats of engagement are likely to follow.”

Regional security, Nikita Belenchenko stressed, remains a priority topic. “No discussion on European or Eurasian security can exclude Belarus. Or the U.S. We remain fully open to all states willing to engage in this dialogue,” he concluded.
