MINSK, 25 December (BelTA) – On 25 December, Catholics celebrate one of the most important Christian holidays – the Nativity of Christ. It commemorates the birth of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, to the Virgin Mary.

According to the Gospel, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. When Emperor Augustus ordered a census of the Roman Empire, Mary and Joseph traveled to the city to register. Finding no room in the inns, they took shelter in a cave used as a stable for cattle. It was there that Jesus was born. An angel announced the Savior’s birth to shepherds tending their flocks, and they came to worship the infant. That same night, the Star of Bethlehem shone in the sky, guiding the Magi to Mary, Joseph, and the newborn child. They too came to honor Jesus, presenting gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Catholics observe the Nativity of Christ with the season of Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Advent is regarded as a time of deep repentance: believers try to practice mercy, attend pre-Christmas services, and prepare for confession so they may receive Holy Communion on Christmas Day with a cleansed spirit.

During this period, churches are adorned with wreaths holding four candles. One candle is lit on the first Sunday, two on the second, and so on, each week adding light.

A distinctive tradition of the holiday is the decoration of homes. Alongside the decorated Christmas tree, a nativity scene is often displayed: figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are placed beside the infant Jesus lying in a manger, surrounded by animal figures.
