Belarusian People’s Congress hailed as important tradition of people’s power

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) - The Belarusian People’s Congress is one of the brightest and most significant traditions of democracy in the modern sovereign period, Director General of Belarus’ National Library Vadim Gigin said at the roundtable "The Constitution of the Republic of Belarus is the fundamental basis of civil agreement and social development" dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Congress, BelTA has learned.

"The Belarusian People’s Congress is one of the brightest and most significant traditions of our democracy in the modern sovereign period. It was the congress that saved our country more than once in a crisis situation, like in October 1996, and helped to overcome the most difficult challenges," Vadim Gigin said.

In February 2021, the Belarusian People’s Congress outlined the program of reforms which resulted in the amendments and additions to the Constitution. This year, the congress celebrates its 30th anniversary, which determined the topic of today's roundtable.
Vadim Gigin also noted that recently Belarus celebrated Constitution Day on 15 March. According to him, the Basic Law of the country, especially in its updated version, contains not only normative postulates but also spiritual values and traditions of the country.

The event was attended by the MPs, representatives of the President Administration, government bodies, the largest public associations and trade unions of the country.

The roundtable was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Congress. The meeting was organized by the Constitutional Court, the Secretariat of the Belarusian People’s Congress, the National Library of Belarus and political party Belaya Rus. The participants discussed the role and activities of civil society in implementing the constitutional powers of the Belarusian People’s Congress and also the current practice in applying the provisions of the laws "On the Belarusian People’s Congress" and "On the foundations of civil society."
