MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – Military personnel continue carrying out missions as part of a comprehensive exercise involving forces of the Western Operational Command. Chief of Staff, First Deputy Commander of the Western Operational Command Aleksandr Lavrenov has explained peculiarities of the exercise, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Defense Ministry.

Aleksandr Lavrenov said: “We are in the final stage of preparations for a defensive operation. A number of steps have been taken to plan the operation. The troops went out and occupied their designated combat areas, started setting up engineering, firing, and combat formations in their responsibility areas.”

The chief of staff emphasized that the exercise is purely defensive. “We are practicing defense using mechanized brigades and combat operations in a support zone. We are practicing counterattacking and restoring positions at the state border,” he clarified.

The first deputy commander of the Western Operational Command remarked that the experience the Russian Federation Armed Forces have had for several years already had been taken into account during the planning and organization of defensive operations and during combat operations. “Unmanned aerial vehicles are now widely used as part of various systems. It helps us a lot with delivering strikes in real time. All the movements are done stealthily,” Aleksandr Lavrenov concluded.
