Belarusian army serviceman: My childhood hobby turned into drone engineering career

BERYOZA DISTRICT, 14 June (BelTA) - Yevgeny Shashkin, a serviceman with the UAV unit, shared his passion for unmanned aviation as he talked to reporters on 13 June, BelTA learned.

The serviceman said that for six years he has been engaged in 3D printing and learned to make quadcopter discharge systems, to assemble FPV drones. What was once a hobby has become a job.

“Since I was a child, I was fascinated by radio-controlled machines. Then, when I studied at the Military Academy as a tankman, I began to study drones, radio-controlled models. When I graduated in 2018, I assembled my first 3D printer and then this branch began to gain momentum in the Armed Forces,” Yevgeny Shashkin noted. “On average, it takes two hours to manufacture a discharge device provided that all components are available.”

Yevgeny Shashkin said he is keeping track of the things made abroad. Some of them can be adopted and upgraded to meet the needs of our unit, he noted. However, most devices are made independently.

“I engineer everything myself. I do not copy anything from the internet, I do it using my brain. Quickly changing frequencies on FPV drones is crucial. Because if the enemy detects the frequency, you need to be able to change it quicly to keep your drone flying. It also must be resistant to interference. The next thing we are working on and which is still at the level of a 3D model is a device that will serve as air defense. It will reach high speeds, intercept aircraft-type reconnaissance drones and ram them,” Yevgeny Shashkin said.

As BelTA has reported, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko visited the center for the preparation and use of unmanned aerial complexes in Beryoza District, Brest Oblast on 13 June. The head of state examined a number of samples of unmanned aerial complexes in service with the Belarusian army.
Some of the models were designed and assembled by Belarusian military personnel. One can say those are custom-made drones. Aleksandr Lukashenko talked to the army specialists and stressed that such inventors should be rewarded.

“The latest product is a gravitational hook for evacuating a lost drone or for delivering water, ammunition, small provisions,” a modernized version of the drone was presented before the president.

“Well done, that guy! First of all, we don’t want people to wonder what will happen if people like him retire. We need ten people like that to succeed him. And we should reward, pay such people and give them everything. This is why I thank you. Incentivize such people. You have to notice such people.”
