MINSK, 14 April (BelTA) – Chairman of the State Customs Committee of Belarus Vladimir Orlovsky described the current situation on the border with the European Union and the new projects implemented by the Belarusian customs service on the air of the First News TV channel, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Orlovsky emphasized that the main task of both customs and border guard agencies is to speed up the border crossing process for both passenger cars and freight vehicles. “All the necessary technologies are in place and technical resources have been deployed for this purpose. But, of course, the infrastructure at border crossing points is also very important. That’s why we are making sure to adapt it so that everything works quickly from a technological standpoint. Over the past five years, we have already reconstructed 12 checkpoints. Last year, we reconstructed two crossing points. The first and largest reconstruction was the Berestovitsa checkpoint on the Belarusian-Polish border, and major repairs were carried out at the Vidzy checkpoint on the Lithuanian border. With Berestovitsa, the timing turned out to be very good and timely, because we completed the reconstruction just before the Polish side opened traffic at that crossing point. We plan to continue this work,” he shared the plans.

The chairman of the State Customs Committee also said that reconstruction of the Kamenny Log crossing point would begin soon. “The reconstruction will essentially mean rebuilding almost all the buildings, structures and lanes. There will be around 20 lanes for vehicles to enter and exit. And, of course, space for an inspection facility and video surveillance. In other words, the most modern equipment we currently have will be installed at this checkpoint once the reconstruction is complete,” he said.

Vladimir Orlovsky stressed that, in addition to the checkpoints themselves, cross-border infrastructure is also of great importance. “There are queues. Unfortunately, our neighbors are still operating at 30% of their capacity. On the Lithuanian direction, queues are almost always present; on the Latvian direction, it is somewhat better; and on the Polish direction, queues appear periodically, depending on the situation or certain holidays,” the chairman of the State Customs Committee noted.

In January, an electronic queue facility was put into operation in front of the Kozlovichi checkpoint after reconstruction. At the end of April, an electronic queue facility will be put into operation in Brest in front of the Varshavsky Most checkpoint. “People are particularly looking forward to it, because this is the main crossing point for passenger cars into the European Union with the largest capacity,” Vladimir Orlovsky concluded.
