Belarus’ security chief: Law enforcement on high alert for voting period

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) - For the duration of the voting period during the parliamentary and local elections, all law enforcement have been put on high alert in the country, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich told reporters, BelTA has learned.

"Law enforcement agencies, starting from the first day of early voting, have been put on high alert. This is an objective necessity. The situation is not easy. Therefore, such measures are absolutely justified. All law enforcement and security agencies have made such decisions and reported to the head of state,” Aleksandr Volfovich said. “In general, the president of our country keeps security issues and everything related to it under almost daily control, monitoring and analyzing the situation, giving appropriate instructions. The Secretariat of the Security Council coordinates the implementation of these decisions."

According to him, operational and situational awareness centers have been deployed today. "The main task is to ensure the protection of the constitutional order, public security on the territory of our country, to protect our citizens, to guard against any risks and challenges and to ensure the safety at polling stations," Aleksandr Volfovich said.

"Today, the national public security monitoring system is operating at full capacity. More than 30,000 CCTV cameras monitor the situation across the country. Information flows to the operational and situational awareness centers for an instant response to a particular situation that may arise. Because we know that not everyone wants things calm in our country. Some of our citizens who fled abroad really want the situation unstable here. But people who live here, on their own land, are interested in security. The task of the law enforcement and security agencies, all people in uniform is to ensure this security," Aleksandr Volfovich added.
