Belarus deposits instrument of ratification to Marrakesh Treaty

MINSK, 23 July (BelTA) - Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich met with World Intellectual Property Organization Director General Francis Gurry at the WIPO headquarters on 22 July 2020, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Yuri Ambrazevich submitted the instrument of ratification of the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled. For Belarus, the Marrakesh Treaty will come into force in three months from the date of deposition of this instrument with the WIPO director general,” the press service informed.

Yuri Ambrazevich noted that Belarus' participation in WIPO multilateral conventions is a practical result of the agreements reached during the official visit of Francis Gurry to Minsk in June 2019 and enshrined in the revised Memorandum of Cooperation between the Government of Belarus and WIPO of 4 June 2019. Yuri Ambrazevich welcomed the positive dynamics in the cooperation between Belarus and WIPO aimed to improve the Belarusian legislation on intellectual property and to promote innovation. He also thanked the WIPO director general for the technical and expert assistance to Belarus.

Belarus is to become the 70th contracting party to the Treaty, which will contribute to expanding the access of visually impaired persons in Belarus to cultural and other information, and to published works. This is another meaningful step to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities.

The WIPO-administered Marrakesh Treaty was signed on 27 June 2013 and entered into force on 30 September 2016. The Treaty is aimed at expanding access to literary and artistic works for the blind, visually impaired and other persons with disabilities by creating uniform conditions for all contracting parties for the reproduction and distribution of works in an accessible format.
