Belarus’ customs chief comments on situation with stranded Polish trucks

MINSK DISTRICT, 19 September (BelTA) -The State Customs Committee hopes for a resolution to the situation on the Polish border within a week, Chairman of the Belarusian State Customs Committee Vladimir Orlovsky told reporters while commenting on the current situation, BelTA has learned.

"Under normal circumstances, when the border is open, trucks, including Polish ones, enter the territory of the Republic of Belarus. Here, semi-trailers are either swapped or cargo is reloaded into a vehicle from a Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member state.  Polish trucks then return to Poland. However, after the Polish side closed the border, Polish trucks are unable to exit back to Poland," Vladimir Orlovsky explained.

Entry into the territory of Belarus is temporary. Typically, it is for a period of 10 days. “This period has already expired for almost all trucks. Therefore, we have decided to extend this period by another ten days,” Vladimir Orlovsky added, noting that the extension is expected to last until approximately 27-28 September.

If the border is not reopened by this time, the vehicles will be relocated to designated areas in Belarus, and measures will be taken against the carriers in accordance with national legislation.

“We hope that within a week the situation will be resolved, and Polish businesses will not suffer from the actions of the Polish authorities,” Vladimir Orlovsky stated.
