MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich has met with prominent members of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB), BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Volfovich said: “Trade unions are among the largest public associations in the country and enjoy considerable authority, especially among worker collectives. Today’s meeting is attended by leaders of industry-specific trade unions, in other words, by people who bear the heavy burden of responsibility. Why? Because more than anyone else they need to understand the processes currently going on in the world, to see and understand the geopolitical situation and its development trends, and how these factors affect the security of our country. Not only do they have to see and understand all of that, they also have to convey all of this information to their worker collectives, explain and clarify the reasons for what is happening, show what decisions the head of state and the government are making to neutralize existing threats to our country.”
He drew attention to the fact that against the backdrop of the traditional struggle between the West and the East as well as the construction of a multipolar world the global situation is far from simple. “We see the political pressure being exerted on small states, the economic sanctions being imposed, and the saber-rattling taking place around the world and near our borders. Essentially, we are witnessing a redistribution of spheres of influence among the world’s major powers. In these circumstances our country has to understand where it is headed and how to protect its national interests. Not only do we all have a duty to ensure the security of our country, but we also have to make Belarus even stronger. This is why strengthening our defense capabilities is one of the key priorities of the country’s social and economic development program for the next five years. We understand that only by ensuring security within the country’s territory will we be able to build a strong economy, develop our country, and make it even more competitive and self-sufficient,” the state secretary noted.
Aleksandr Volfovich also pointed out that some opponents abroad say that Belarus’ economy has collapsed and people’s lives have gotten worse. However, statistics paints a different picture. The gold and foreign exchange reserves have reached record high levels, and the export of goods and services is growing. Despite the pressure of sanctions Belarus is expanding its trade and economic relations with a large number of countries. A high level of food security has been ensured, and the state’s social commitments are being fulfilled. “This is why at the Belarusian People’s Congress the head of state said that everything we have achieved is a credit to the entire Belarusian people. And worker collectives are the core of the Belarusian people. And, certainly, our trade union organizations deserve great credit for this,” emphasized the state secretary of the Security Council.
He stressed that the most important thing is to prevent what the West seeks to achieve: destabilization of the situation in our country. “And only together, through joint efforts, including by raising the awareness of worker collectives, can we ensure peace, security, and stable prosperity for our beloved Motherland,” Aleksandr Volfovich concluded.
