MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – The city diplomacy of Belarus and Germany aims to use all opportunities for dialogue for the sake of peace and harmony, Boris Batura, Chairman of the Board of the Belarusian public organization Twin Cities, said at the 12th meeting of representatives of the twin cities of Belarus and Germany in Minsk on 18 November, BelTA has learned.
"Amid the global turbulent situation, which is already called 'emergency times', the city diplomacy seeks to use all opportunities for dialogue for the sake of peace and harmony. We are trying to do this by holding such meetings and maintaining working relations," Boris Batura stressed.
According to him, the continuation of traditions contributes to the Belarusian-German twinning relations. He recalled: "First twinning agreements between Belarusian and German cities were signed in 1987 and 1989. Such our cities as Minsk, Molodechno and Brest participated in all the Soviet-German meetings of sister cities. There were three of them before 1991."
"More twinning agreements have been signed since Belarus became sovereign. There are 18 of them to date. Since 1993, we have held our meetings regularly, once every two years," he added.
"This year celebrates the 80th anniversary of Belarus' liberation from Nazi invaders. Considering the historical past, we have determined with our German partners that it is important for us to exchange views on the role of the twin cities in strengthening a peaceful future," the chairman said. “We provided our guests with an opportunity to see that Belarusians preserve historical memory. The delegation visited two memorial complexes: Stalin Line and Khatyn. We also do not forget the moral and financial support of the German people after the Chernobyl disaster."
