‘A simple decency’: What a refugee from Latvia values most in Belarusians

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) –  In The Honest Story project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, refugee from Latvia Roman Samul explained why he liked living among Belarusians.
When asked what he finds most appealing about Belarusians, Roman Samul said that Belarusians are humble and decent people. “People here haven’t yet been corrupted. Family values come first,” he explained. “I hear parents say, for instance, that they need to buy an apartment for their son or daughter so they can live in their own home rather than a dormitory and start building an independent life.”

He contrasted this with the situation in Latvia, where such aspirations are often unattainable. “That’s impossible in Latvia; there, your primary concern is just for your child to have a roof over their head, even if it’s the parents’ roof. Here, you think about your children’s future, their proper education. That is truly the most important thing.”

“People here have the right values,” Roman Samul reflected.

Speaking about buying and renovating a house in the Belarusian village where he now lives with his wife and daughter, Roman Samul noted that the family has consistently felt the support of local residents. “There were old trees, some diseased, and overgrown bushes, so we cleared everything with our Belarusian friends. And they helped us not for money, but free of charge,” he recounted.
