Lukashenko: We need better results in flax industry

MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled his instructions in flax industry as he talked to scientists following the ceremony to award Doctor of Science diplomas and professor certificates to academic, research and teaching staff on 31 January, BelTA has learned.
"Frankly speaking, I am not very impressed with the Flax Institute. You have learned how to grow flax (every year I see that your flax is excellent), but I instructed you to scale up these practices throughout the country in order to achieve better results," Aleksandr Lukashenko said. "We have also restored flax seed plants, because without seeds we cannot grow anything. We have not achieved the results we agreed upon. Keep in mind that we need better results. Let's think about how we can improve our flax cultivation."

The president emphasized that flax is a national symbol and an important crop for Belarus.
"I raised money bit by bit across the country to modernize the Orsha Linen Mill. We produce great goods there. Maybe our women have not come to fully appreciate flax yet, but they are gradually starting to. Bedding, clothes. They may be more wrinkly and so on, but they are great for our health. Even specialists say that we are successfully fighting cancer by using flax products. This is very important for us and the whole world. We need flax, but we also need results," the head of state said.

In his words, Belarusian scientists produce good samples in the laboratory, but the situation is worse in the field. The producers do not receive quality raw materials.

"So, let's agree that this year we will start implementing what I have instructed you to do. If you need anything, please let me know. You have all the resources you need, so please do it. We need flax," Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.

He also pointed out that flax products are in demand in foreign markets, and even low-quality raw materials are bought up.

"Imagine how they buy high-quality flax. Go to Orsha and look: we collected equipment from all over the world to modernize their mill. Other countries are practically no longer engaged in flax production. We put this equipment into operation, built the lines, and now we are manufacturing good products. But scientists are still lagging behind. So pay more attention to this issue," the president stressed.
