MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) - In his Address to the Belarusian People and Parliament, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out shortcomings in the timber sector, BelTA has learned.
The head of state noted that the country spends tens of millions on importing furniture and paper packaging, yet struggles to build affordable calf nurseries on a large scale. Meanwhile, in Belarus, wood literally lies unused along forest edges.
“Relevant officials show a disgraceful attitude to the industry into which, by the way, we invested $2.5 billion in the previous wave of modernization, including a pulp and cardboard mill,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“Not a single kopeck has been recovered so far. Or do you think someone will write it off for you? Get those thoughts out of your head. In terms of a finished kraft sack paper manufacture at Svetlogorsk, you've been feeding us tales about it for five years now,” the president emphasized.

The head of state pointed out that yet another cabinet has failed to demonstrate tangible results regarding the ‘triad of raw materials’: timber, flax, and leather. “Either you are indifferent individuals, or you simply have no ambition at all. Without ambition, you will get nowhere,” the Belarusian leader added.
