Lukashenko: Poland refused to negotiate Andrei Pochobut’s case

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – The Polish authorities refused to even negotiate the extradition of convicted in Belarus Andrei Pochobut, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media as he visited the Minsk City Technopark on 16 January, BelTA has learned.

"I have even nothing to say about Andrei Pochobut. As a person who has the information I tell you frankly: they gave up on him. The Poles refused to even negotiate his case. As far as I know, Pochobut does not want to go there. That is the situation," the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that Andrei Pochobut is a Belarusian citizen and he was charged with crimes under the law. "We will see what happens. The world is a wide place," the president added.

As BelTA reported earlier, in February 2023, the Grodno Oblast Court passed a sentence on Andrei Pochobut. He had been working for many years in an illegal organization, which allegedly unites Poles in Belarus. He also contributed to the glorification of the Armia Krajowa.

Andrei Pochobut was found guilty of publicly calling for actions that could harm the national security of Belarus, spreading materials containing such calls through mass media and the internet, intentionally inciting national, religious, and other forms of social hatred and discord. He was sentenced to eight years in a penal colony.
