Lukashenko downplays flood risks despite snowy winter

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – I do not expect large-scale spring floods despite the snowy winter this year, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he made new appointments in Minsk on 3 march, BelTA has learned.

“I want to say it publicly: if anyone is expecting large-scale spring floods this year, they are mistaken. Indeed, there is snow, but it fell during frosty weather. When it snows at -20-30°C, snow is soft, powdery. And as soon as temperatures rose, it shrank. I had a look in the forest, in the fields. Well, the snow cover is 20-30 cm at most, where it was induced by wind,” the president said.

At the same time, he noted that this is significantly more than in previous years: “The Emergencies Ministry is right to prepare for floods. We had a lot of snow after all. But there won’t be much left of it. It has become compacted. The thaw in late February and early March put it in its place. It was packed hard, and there is no deep snow.”
