Lukashenko comments on rising global energy prices, Belarus’ response

MINSK, 3 April (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the rise in global energy prices and outlined Belarus’ approach to the issue, BelTA has learned.

“When the war [in the Middle East] began, fuel prices started to rise. For us, things are still manageable. Everyone from all those ‘hostile’ states is coming here to refuel. I do not consider them enemies, of course. They are coming to the 'dictatorship' to refuel [their vehicles],” the president said. “People from Ukraine do not come, though, as the border has been completely closed. If they come, let them refuel. We do not mind.”

“We currently have more favorable conditions. Nevertheless, prices are rising, and this does not depend on us. We did not start the war in the Middle East, and we did not block a quarter of natural gas and petroleum products in the Strait of Hormuz. But the world is interconnected. So when families buy two or three cars, they should remember that there is no such thing as free gasoline,” the head of state noted.
Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that Belarus imports most of the crude oil from which various types of fuel are produced. “And the price here depends on that as well. But for now, it is bearable. Even if prices shift slightly somewhere, we keep it under control, and we try to raise wages at least a little to compensate. I know we do not live richly. But it is manageable,” he said.
