Lukashenko calls for measures to ensure food security in EAEU

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) – It is necessary to take every measure to ensure food security in the Eurasian Economic Union. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement during the videoconference session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on 21 May, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko reminded that at the start of the pandemic the UN Food and Agriculture Organization projected food shortages and even famine in some parts of the planet. “These projections are already coming true. From various sources we hear that about half a billion people on our planet starve and receive less food than necessary,” he noted.

“Within the framework of the union we should take every measure to ensure our own food security. While doing so, we should not miss out on our benefits from international trade. We should avoid excessive barriers in trade inside our union and in trade with other countries,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stated.

He urged the Eurasian Economic Commission to finish work on the technical regulation on the safety of food products soon. “It is necessary to address issues and conflicted points,” the head of state stressed.

“Listen, we talk about food, the need to provide people with food, and about very dangerous trends in this field all the time. Meanwhile, we've been fiddling with the document for over a year now,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked.
