MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) - The Belarusian-Russian relations have recently shown impressive progress, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to the media after talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Minsk on 24 May, BelTA has learned.
“We have held fruitful talks both one-on-one and together with our delegations. I am grateful to the president of Russia for finding time in his extremely busy schedule to pay an official visit to Belarus. This is a good signal, and not only a signal,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
According to the head of state, the parties discussed in detail a large list of issues of Belarusian-Russian cooperation, primarily in the economic sector. “You may have noticed that recently we have spent a lot of time discussing security and defense issues. Today we have devoted time mainly to economic issues,” the president said.
“The Belarusian-Russian relations have recently demonstrated impressive progress. The level of interaction and trust between our countries in all areas is truly unprecedented,” the president emphasized. “We can confidently state that the economies of Belarus and Russia are steadily developing despite various obstacles.”
According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, Belarus aims to further develop the nuclear industry on the basis of Russian technologies. The presidents discussed in detail the issues of industrial cooperation, development of mechanical engineering and machine tool building, and microelectronics. “We need this first of all, for building up import-substituting industries, which help us ensure our import independence and technological sovereignty. Ultimately, this means the security of our states. We am confident that the new Russian government will preserve continuity in terms of priority consideration of the issues related to Belarusian-Russian cooperation,” the head of state said.
The parties paid considerable attention to the development of the transportation and logistics sector. “Here we are unanimous in our opinion that serious additional investments are required in this very promising sector,” the president emphasized.
“We have recently taken a new look at regional cooperation and appreciated its potential. Belarus and its regions are now cooperating with almost all subjects of the Russian Federation, with exports on a constant rise,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
He added that on 27-28 June 2024 the Belarusian cities of Vitebsk, Polotsk and Novopolotsk are set to host the 11th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia. “We expect you to attend this forum. I know that there will be a very interesting agenda,” the president stressed.
Summarizing the talks, Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed gratitude to his Russian counterpart for “great, fraternal conversation, fruitful and constructive meeting”. According to him, the parties found mutual understanding on all the topics and look forward to further mutual comprehensive support.
