Call to empower Belarusian People's Congress to amend constitution

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has made a suggestion to empower the Belarusian People's Congress, which is set to be given a constitutional status, to amend the Constitution, BelTA has learned.

“I think the Belarusian People's Congress should be given the power to amend the Constitution. Lawmaking is a serious thing. We will decide on the Constitution at the referendum and may vest the Belarusian People's Congress with the right to make amendments and additions to it,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

According to Chairman of the Constitutional Court and the Constitutional Commission Piotr Miklashevich, the issues related to the powers and the status of the Belarusian People's Congress will be finalized taking into account the existing proposals and opinions. “Today we have had a detailed discussion of how the Belarusian People's Congress should be formed and what powers it should be vested with. A balance should also be preserved in the state power system, so that there were no contradictions and substitution of other bodies. A number of proposals have been made. They will need a careful study,” he said.
