Belarus in negotiations on buying S-400 air defense systems from Russia

MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia are negotiating the delivery of S-400 air defense systems. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a meeting with representatives of the general public, experts, and mass media titled as the Big Conversation with the President on 9 August, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “We are in a dialogue with Russia in order to get S-400 systems delivered to Belarus. President of Russia Vladimir Putin has been asked to allow us to buy them at a bulk price, on credit. Although S-300 systems are good and we've learned how to upgrade them and restore them. However, we have a strong interest in S-400 systems. I am convinced we will get these systems.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko also mentioned the assets the Belarusian government intends to use to buy S-400 air defense systems. Some of the money allocated for building the Belarusian nuclear power plant has been saved and can be used to buy the missile systems.

Dwelling on the matter of improving the military hardware stock, Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked: “In the past we bet on the air defense missile systems Tor-M2. They are good weapons. We know how to use them. We also know how to upgrade, restore, and repair them because everything wears out with time. We have the relevant equipment, a plant for repairing armored vehicles, and several private enterprises.”
